Our story

Once upon a time...

The ideas behind Vergeten Verlichting can be traced back to an industrial site in a village on the Leie, still betraying the traces of construction from a recent past. They were further fuelled by the stories of grandfather, stories of long ago, but not actually.

The name was established when a photograph from the thirties saw the light of day again after many decades. It was a picture of a large machine in a factory with a little light on a little wire. Simplicity and beauty, apparently forgotten: Vergeten Verlichting.

Artists' village

The heimat of Vergeten Verlichting is Machelen a.d. Leie. This village, about halfway between Ghent and Kortrijk, has managed to hold on to its small-scale charm. The church with its square and adjacent houses on the old meander of the Leie define the village centre and are a source of inspiration for artists.
